Vol. 26 No.11 November 2009

Comments from the President

I thought our first meeting at Honker’s went very well. We did though overwhelm them with extra people. We normally have 20 and we had 30 for dinner. This was a good way to start our meeting there. Don’t forget this coming meeting is the elections. We have some good candidates for president and vice-president. Check out the list in this newsletter. On your election sheet there is a place to mark the person or couple you think should be awarded the Pumper Award. This would be the person/couple you think pumped the most enthusiasm into the club this past year. Also, you can mark yes/no whether you would like to continue meeting at Honker’s or not.

For this meeting we are asking members to bring some can goods to help our neighbors in need. These items will be given to the Food Bank. Also, don’t forget to bring a toy for the Toys For Tots box. The toys need to be new and unwrapped. Please bring the toys to this meeting so Howard and I can deliver them the morning of our Christmas dinner.

The Christmas party is Saturday, December 5 at Honker’s. The room will be open at 6:30 p.m. and dinner will be at 7

p.m. (local time). You need to prepay Jane by November 28.

The cost is $15 per person. Our condolences go to Jane Yoder and the family in the loss of her father. You are in our thought and prayers.

If we’re lucky there will be at least one more time for us to take our ponies out for a run. Hope to see many of you at our meeting.

Bob

Minutes from last month’s meeting:

The October 12th meeting of the Michiana Mustangs was held at the Honkers Restaurant in Mishawaka.

Forty-six members and guests attended this first meeting held at our new meeting/eating location. All agreed that it was a good place to eat and meet.

Members and guests present

were: Scott & Mrs. Anderson, Howard Barrett, Jim Boal, Kathleen Bringman, Art Campbell, Vic & Connie Garrison, Bob Goeller, Jerry Handlin, Marty Hughes, Elaine Kersey, Rob Killingsworth, Joe & Sandy Kraatz, Neal Lewis, Curly & Karon Long, Valerie Frances Malecki, Hal & Rose McClure, Brad Milliken & Kim Zink, Bob Miller, Phil & Tandy Nicodemus, Ron & Charlotte Newcomer, Kevin Price, Arnie O’Blenis, Ken & Diane Reed, Bob Relos, Ted & Pat Sauerbeck, Jim & June Schmidt, Ken & Becky Schmitt, Mark Taelman, George Wachs, Larry & Shirley Weaver, Alan Wright, and Dave & Jane Yoder

President Bob Goeller welcomed

all members and guests. The minutes were approved as reported.

Regional MCA Director Jim Schmidt had not received the new report. Non MCA members were reminded that the discount still applies for joining the MCA.

Treasurer Dave Yoder's report

was approved as read. Event Director Brad Milliken thanked all who attended the fall cruise up to the AirZoo in Kalamazoo, Michigan. Thanks to Brad for making the arrangements and leading the cruise.

The second cruise was up to the home of member Jim Neis who had a really neat garage with at least 4 Porsches in it, besides having apple and peach orchards. That group also went to a winery and had dinner at the famed Miller's Cafe in New Carlisle, IN.

Brad will be checking into the possibility of a plant tour through the Mustang Plant in Flat Rock, Michigan.

Howard reported that the Toys for Tots campaign will be the day of our Christmas Party again, so it was decided to bring those toys and canned goods for the food bank to our November meeting.

Ballots were passed out for nomination of new officers for next year. The nominees are printed elsewhere in the newsletter.

Our dessert for the evening was a cake baked by Karon Long to celebrate June's birthday (THANKS, KARON) and to commiserate over Karon and Curly's leaving the area for their home out west for the winter.

The president of the Ft. Wayne Mustang Club had e-mailed our president reporting that the MCA president had corresponded with him about the possibility of our club and theirs hosting a golf outing. This was tabled until next year.

Dave and Carol Cooper celebrate

10 years in the club this year. The dispersal of our profit from the car show was discussed. Hospice and the Food Bank were two possibilities for giving the $1000. A motion was made to table this until the November meeting.

There were no car questions, so the meeting was adjourned.

June K. Schmidt, Secretary

Mustang Christmas Dinner

Our Mustang Christmas Dinner will be on Saturday Dec. 5th at the Honkers on Day Rd. in Mishawaka.

It will be a two meat buffet; the cost is $15 per person which includes everything.

The room will be open at 6:30 (local

time) with dinner at 7:00. We will have a table set up so that we can bring our usual goodies to share before/after the meal.

I would welcome anyone who would like to help with decorating or has ideas. That is not an area I am good at :-) Just let me know.

You need to pre-pay me by Nov. 28th as I need to confirm the number since that is what the club will be charged for. You can pay at the next meeting with either cash or a check made out to the club.

Thanks, Jane Yoder

Sad Note...

Wanted to let you know that Jane's dad, Harry Kane, passed away recently. He hadn't been well for sometime. The service will be on Sunday, Nov. 8th at 2:30 p.m. at the Nappanee Missionary Church. It will be a celebration of her dad's life with a time afterwards to mingle and chat. I ask that you keep Jane and her family in your thoughts and prayers, as this is a tough time for their family. You also might want to send a card or note to Jane just to let her know that you are thinking of her.

Thank You...

First, I would like to say thanks to so many of you for sending me cards of encouragement following my shoulder surgery. And then a week later I lost my father. I would like to thank the club members for the many cards, notes, planter and phone calls offering sympathy and support following the passing of my dad. With his health issues it has been a difficult year. My dad loved coming over and looking at all of the Mustangs lined up across our yard and his every year when we had the Bremen show and shine and breakfast. Many of you had a chance to know him and chat about cars. He was always a loyal Ford man! Your support has been overwhelming and we thank you all very much.

Vic announced in the last meeting that I want to sell the Fridge, Bob's 1972 Mach 1. We felt (Vic and I) that $25,000 is a fair price. I would like to sell it before winter, and preferably to a member of the club. I have an interested party here that I'm waiting to hear from, but I thought the club ought to know.

Vic has it, and will answer any questions anyone will have.

Many thanks, and , much love to the club, Becky Christena

Essenhaus, Take 2

On September 24th 22 Michiana Mustangs were strutting their stuff at the season ending Das Essenhaus Cruise-in at Middlebury. The first 200 cars of the eventual total 300 cars at the show received Essenhaus dash plaques. This was the first time, in the four years they've been having the cruise-in, that they had ever given out dash plaques. It was so anticipated by the regular Thursday night cruisers that the first cars arrived at 8:30 am to get a good spot and make sure they received the plaque.

The first Michiana Mustang, me, arrived at 2:30 in the afternoon. I roped of an area to accommodate 30 of our club cars so we could have our cars in one spot and have an area where all of us could gather in our usual "chair circle" to shoot the breeze. Several of the club members won door prizes and nearly everyone had a bowl of ice cream. Many of us went to the Essenhaus to eat. Some said they ate way too much. The Schmidts came all the way from Kouts and Steve and Dawn drove over 80 miles to get there. I thank all the club members who came to give the club a good showing. Let's do it again next year. I do have an extra dash plaque for anyone who didn't get one because they missed the first 200. Email me and I will send it to you on a first come basis.

I do have one suggestion for this and for other events at which one of our members is organizing the event. Everyone who signs up to attend should have the cell phone number of the one doing the organizing so they can call them to let them know that they will be late or will not be able to make it. It can reflect badly on the club if the event organizer makes arrangements for a certain number of cars and we come up short. Also, as in the fall cruises as an example, the group is waiting on someone to show up so the group can get under way and they unnecessarily hold things up. Please give that some consideration in the future. We should consider how others view us as a club. Hats off to those few who step up and provide the great fun activities for the club.

More 'Questions That Must Be Answered'

  • Can you cry underwater?

  • Why do you have to "put your two cents in", but it's only a "penny for your thoughts"? Where's that extra penny going to?

  • Once you're in Heaven, do you get stuck for eternity wearing the clothes you were buried in?

  • What disease did cured ham actually have?

From the Back Seat… Giving Thanks

I can’t tell you why, but Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday each year. Maybe because the purpose of the holiday is so logical – be thankful for what you have.

As a group, we’re very lucky. Although all of us have been affected by the national economic ‘situation’, I’m not aware of anyone who has had to sell their Mustang to make ends meet. And for many if not most of us the Mustang(s) are ‘extra’ cars that can be put away for the winter while we drive something else that takes the winter beatings. This is definitely something to be thankful for.

We have all seen and heard stories of neighbors who are struggling like never before to get by. As I said in my earlier letter, I know we can’t solve the problem ourselves, but I’m hoping that everyone in the club can view our Food Drive as a way to show thanks for what we have. It strikes me as a sad commentary on life in this country that we have people going hungry every day, especially considering that many in this group are children. I’m not about to get into a debate over governmental policy, or who’s responsible; that’s for people far smarter than I am.

We’ve been very good in the past for supporting Toys for Tots; I hope we can do the same for the Food Bank. And, in case anyone is wondering, I am being greedy here; I want to see us do a good job for both organizations. I know we can do it.

Have a good month...
