Vol. 27 No.6 June 2010

From the front seat of my red GT...

Well, here it is June already and the weather is finally getting nice. I am sure every one who went to Brown County had a great time. I haven’t heard yet but we will allow time at our June meeting for this report from those who want to share. I will not be present at the June meeting, for I will be still traveling back from Canada. We will also be reporting on how the Memorial Day parades went. Don’t forget the show and shine at Eby Ford in Goshen on June 19th, starting at 8:30 AM. A Nelson’s chicken lunch will be provided by Eby Ford. I will have a few more details and will send a general e-mail to every one about the order of events for that day. The show and shine at Bremen Ford will be the 26th. More details at our next meeting.

Remember to bring your door prizes since we only have a few weeks to get them in for our show. Don’t forget our annual picnic on the 12th of July at Twin Branch Park in Mishawaka.

I still need a couple of volunteers to help cook. This is always a great time for all of us to get together. Also this is the time we have our annual Paul Houseman award and for those who have 1st generation Mustangs and would like them judged for this award please just bring your cars to the picnic.

Hope to see you all on the 14th of June at Honkers on Day Road. If not, I will see you all at the picnic. Howard

(We welcome Simone to the newsletter. Her job was to make sure Grandpa behaved himself at the Mishawaka parade. He did!-Ed.)

"You’re never too y o ung to own a Mustang" .

Valerie Malecki writes to let us know, “These are my great-granddaughters in Wisconsin - Grace is four and sister Ellie is 9 months. Grace drives it like a 'pro'.”

There’s nothing like getting kids properly trained to know what car they should drive!

Essenhaus Cruis e -In

We will be having our 1st Cruise In to the Essenhaus Thursday, June 10th. The Cruise In starts officially at 5:30pm but we will be reserving a block of spaces for our members so getting there a little late should not be a problem.

The long range forecast for that day is a passing morning shower; otherwise, mostly cloudy, with a high of 74 degrees. Sounds like perfect car show weather to me.

The entertainment for the evening will be the Hartland Cloggers. This is a very energetic local group that puts on a good show.

Please e-mail me at kenschmitt69@msn.com if you are planning on coming or even if you are just thinking about it.

Thanks Ken Schmitt

FORD FAN SPOTLIGHT

Shirley and Danny Fender of Mars Hill, NC, Report Their '89 Mustang is Nearing the 700,000-mile Mark!

Back in August of 2007, Ford Racing featured a story about a true-blue Ford family from Mars Hill, NC, whose 1989 Mustang GT had topped 600,000 miles on the original drivetrain. The exploits of Shirley Fender and her Mustang not only made her the darling of regional newspaper and TV outlets , but also won her and her son, Danny, the VIP treatment at a NASCAR race at Bristol, courtesy of Ford Racing. Well, today, we're pleased to report that Shirley's Mustang is closing in on 700,000 miles – and is still going strong!

Shirley has rolled up all those miles working as a traveling vacuum cleaner salesperson, with customers in her own Madison County and far beyond, covering much of western North Carolina and well up into the mountains of eastern Tennessee. Danny credits the Mustang's longevity to keeping it maintained, including regular oil changes, noting that the car has recently been recognized by Valvoline and was featured in a cable television episode of PowerBlock TV last month. The Fenders have been a Ford family for decades, starting with a Maverick, a Pinto, a Mustang and an Escort before getting a 1988 Ford Ranger pickup and the Mustang GT in 1989. Her son, Danny, still has and drives the Ranger, which has also rolled up six-digit miles.

"People who see me keep saying, 'Shirley – are you STILL driving that Mustang?' and 'How many miles do you have on it now'?" she says. "And I tell them, 'Yes! It's over 692,000 – and even with my 5.0 V-8 it averages about 25 miles per gallon!' I'm not going to quit driving my Mustang because it hasn't quit on me!" The ongoing loyalty of the Fenders easily qualifies them as Ford fanatics. If you know of others, simply send info and a photo (or a link to a YouTube video) to: AskTFR@Ford.com . And check Fast Newseach week to see who we might pick to bask in the glow of Ford Racing's "Ford Fan Spotlight!"

Welcome to the club. We’re looking forward to getting to know you!

Spring Show at Harold Zeigler Ford Lincoln Mercury

Looking at the weather, you would have thought it was March 8 instead of May 8. Cold rain and a wind chill of 35° greeted the participants and spectators at the Harold Zeigler Ford Lincoln Mercury show.

Mustang (and Ford) people are a hearty group, and 26 vehicles made the final lineup; 21 Mustangs, 3 pickups, 1 SUV, and 1 Ford Passenger Car.

Radio Station B-100 was on hand with music, and they drew the tickets for a large number of door prizes. Prizes included $50 gift cards from Best Buy, movie passes, oil changes at Harold Zeigler, and tickets to a country music show in Chicago.

Trophies were awarded in 7 classes plus a ’Best of

Show’ award. Brad Milliken called during the show, informing us that it was going to be 88° that afternoon in Myrtle Beach, where he and Kim were at that moment. Somehow, that seemed more like car show weather.

$848.00 was raised and donated to St.Jude’s Hospital

from the day’s activities. Next year’s show has been scheduled for June 4 in an attempt to have better weather. We’ll see what Mother has to say about that!

Thanks to Nelson Neal, Pranay Gaikwad, and the Zeigler staff for their work to put the show together.

2010 Spring Fling ‘Pony Trail’

This year’s ‘Pony Trail’ was a cruise to the Ray Skillman Muscle Car Museum in Greentown. We were greeted by a light mist for the Drivers Meeting and had threatening skies all day, but the predicted severe weather held off until evening.

Approximately 50 vehicles took part in this year’s Pony Trail. The cruise was an easy 40-mile drive, with none of the road construction surprises of last year’s cruise to Salem Speedway.

A view from the balcony gives an idea of the museum’s size

Arriving at the Museum, we were greeted by the sight of another group of Cobras touring the Museum. Lunch was catered by Famous Dave’s, and we were encouraged to eat before touring, since Tornado sirens had been heard just before our arrival. Again, the weather held off.

This ‘69 Shelby was an original Survivor, with 16,500 miles on the odometer.

If you were interested, this ‘67 Shelby was on sale for only $410,000, down from $500,000 earlier in the week.

At the Drivers Meeting we were told that we would only see about half of the cars normally on display. A If you’re in the area, this is definitely a stop worth Mecom auction was in progress in Indianapolis; many making. Many thanks to Dan Aiken for arranging the of the cars normally on display were instead on the

Some of Murphy's Lesser-Known Laws

  • Change is inevitable -- except from a vending machine.

  • Those who live by the sword get shot by those who don't.

  • If you lined up all the care in the world end to tend, someone would be stupid enough to try to pass them, five or six at a time, on a hill, in the fog.

  • The things that come to those who wait will be the things left by those who got there first.

  • A "fine" is a tax for doing wrong. A "tax" is a fine for doing well.

From the Back Seat…

We’re now in the busy part of the summer; it seems

there’s at least one event going on every weekend. Thanks to everyone who contributed articles this month. As always, I appreciate the effort.

  • June 12 is the date for the West Michigan Mustang Club show in Grand Rapids. The club always puts on a good show. They have also supported our show very well over the past few years. For the past 3 or 4 years it seems that Becky and I have been the only members of our club to go to Grand Rapids. If there’s any way you can make this show, I think you’ll enjoy it, and it’s time we repay the club for their support of our show.

  • A big tip of the cap to Bob Nicola and Tom Kasting from the Old Fort Mustang club. George Wachs had a problem with his car on the way back to the lodge after the Spring Fling show. Bob and Tom were behind George, stopped to help, and got George running again. Once again we had a demonstration of what Mustang people are all about.

  • Howard mentioned it in his comments, but I wanted to put in another word for the picnic next month. Let’s see a large group of first generation Mustangs competing for this year’s Paul Houseman Award.

  • If you went to Spring Fling this year, please feel free to send me your stories. Also, if you took any pictures, please send me a copy. If they don’t make it to the newsletter, they can be included in a ’Year in Review’ I’m starting to compile.

  • Thanks to everyone that participated in one or more of the Memorial Day Parades. More on the parades in the next issue.

Have a good month...
