June, 2008 Volume XIX, No. 6
As usual, the INSAAC Spring Fling was a great way to spend a weekend, even with rain greeting some of us on Thursday afternoon. June Schmidt’s report is on page 4. Many of us have said it before, and I’ll say it again; if you haven't gone to a Spring Fling, you really need to make a point of joining us next year.
What a day we had in Niles! The new Saleen models are some of the best-looking cars they have ever produced, and the Saleen employees were knowledgeable and friendly. Many thanks to Ron Ward and the staff at Campbell Ford Lincoln Mercury. Becky’s report is on page 5.
I also want to thank everyone that took part in the three Memorial Day parades. We had 7 cars in South Bend, and 14 cars in both the Mishawaka and Elkhart parades. I heard a lot of positive responses to the club from some very enthusiastic crowds.
Next month’s meeting is our annual picnic. Anyone willing to help with picnic preparations should contact me.
Finally, it’s time for me to start begging and whining for car show door prizes. As I said last year, the best way to stop the whining is to get your donations to Steve York or George and Shirley Wachs.
Hope to see you at the meeting…
President Art Campbell opened the meeting and welcomed all guests and members. Those present were:

Jim read some of the qualifications needed for our club to receive the President's award.
Sweatshirts can still be ordered. Brad Milliken will be getting the price for a denim embroidered jacket
also. Members were reminded that the Brown County SAAC Spring Fling will be this coming weekend. Curly Long has an 11:40 tee time down there for any golfers interested in joining Karon and him. The signup sheet for the cookout was passed around.
Show chairperson Carl Kindig, reminded members that it is time to start bringing in door prizes. Each member is requested to bring at least one or two prizes for this. The items can be car-related or other- wise. Steve York and George Wachs will be in charge of these.
There will be a Show Committee meeting after tonight's meeting. All members are welcome to stay for
it. Carl reported that there had been some problems with our website, but he has changed to a different com- pany and it should be working now.
Our club will be participating in 3 Memorial Day parades: South Bend will begin a 8:30 a.m., Misha-
waka at 9:30 and Elkhart at 1:30. All members are encouraged to attend one or all of them. George Wachs needs volunteers for the Grand Prix Go-cart race on June 20th & 21st. Volunteers receive a free hat, t-shirt and a meal and the satisfaction of helping our youth.
Rose McClure has over 200 recipes for our club Cookbook, but more are needed.
Our July meeting will be our annual picnic at the part in Mishawaka. Carl will see about reserving our usual area. Chris Pasternak brought his 16 year old daughter who was celebrating her birthday. She attended her
first meeting when she was 16 months old. She was lucky enough to receive a brand-new used 1996
Mustang convertible for her birthday. Brad thanked all who attended the Mustang Birthday party at Mustang McDonald's. Eighteen club cars attended.
Congratulations to Janette and Kevin Price who were married on April 25th. 50/50 - $28 won by Steve York. A motion was made to adjourn. June Schmidt, Secretary
Dan Gurney Saleen Signature Event Show and Shine
On Saturday, May 24, 2008, a nice collection of Mustangs and their owners showed up at Campbell Ford-Lincoln-Mercury in Niles, MI to meet Dan Gurney and see the newest variation from Saleen. Unfortunately, Mr. Gurney was not able to attend the event, but there were plenty of gorgeous cars to look at, including the Sterling Edition 25th Anniversary Saleen Mustang and the newest Saleen S7.
The Michiana Mustangs were out in force, with 13 cars in attendance. There were a few Saleen owners there with their Mustangs and Explorers as well. The cars drew a nice crowd of spectators, including a Michigan State Trooper who cruised through.
The Saleen staff was happy to be there and one rep was taking people out for rides in a new white Saleen coupe. If you are cruising north on M-51 in Niles, you might see the black tire marks in front of Campbell Ford-Lincoln-Mercury. It was the “launching area” for the Saleen. Several club members went for rides in the car and can attest to the fun of it.
A big thanks to Ron Ward from Campbell Ford-Lincoln-Mercury for putting this show and shine together with the folks from Saleen.

My First Mustang
It was the summer of 1970; I had just finished my first year of college in Oklahoma. I was taking summer classes at a college nearby and driving my dad’s pickup back and forth to classes. Well, after one week of doing that, I came home to find a 1965 black Mustang coupe. My dad had purchased it for $500 so I would-n’t have to drive the pickup. I fell in love with the car; it even had spinner hubcaps. One added feature was cement poured in the back quarter panels, as it had been used for drag racing.
This car got me to work, classes, and even Tulsa Oklahoma.
I drove out there; not shutting the engine off to get gas for fear it wouldn’t start, and arrived there with no transmission fluid.
In 1972 I got married and the car came with me; it then turned into my husband’s work car. It started having a few problems such as when it got hot it waited 5 minutes before going into reverse. And the cement was starting to fall out when you were driving down the street. As it wouldn’t pass inspection anymore it found a home at Gill’s junkyard in 1977. I still have the spinner hubcaps from the car.
This started my love for Mustangs!
