Vol. 27 No.7 July 2010
Well it is almost July and it is time for our annual picnic. Once again we will be at the Twin Branch Park located on IN 933 in Mishawaka. For those new members who will be attending it is between Bittersweet and Capital Blvd. A great time will be had with good food and fellowship along with a time of remembering our club members who have passed on. Let’s not forget those door prizes for our show. Also please remember that our August meeting will be at the Concord Mall in the north parking lot on August 2nd.
We just finished up two show and shines at two of our sponsors the past two weekends. On the 19th we were at Eby Ford sales in Goshen. The day started out sunny and soon became cloudy but no rain and then turned sunny again. We had fourteen of our club cars there and we talked to several who showed interest in joining our club. On the 26th we were at Bremen Ford and the day started out rainy but ended up very nice. We had fourteen cars there also and we signed up two new members. Thanks to Jane and Dave Yoder for their hospitality before the show and shine.
Hope to see you at the picnic on July 12th
Howard

The secretary's and treasurer's reports were
approved. Our July meeting will be our picnic on July 12th at Twin Branch Park in Mishawaka. Bring your appetites; a dish to share, DOOR PRIZES FOR THE CAR SHOW, and this date will be the last time that you will be able to register your Mustang for our show. The Houseman award for the best 1st generation Mustang will be chosen here also. See you there!!!! (6 P.M.) EST
Regional MCA Director, Jim Schmidt had no official report, but filled us in on his trip to Mustang, Oklahoma for the National Show where the weather was hot and the storms were booming. "John Wayne" made an appearance at the show. What a great look-alike! From his voice to his scarred face, you could have sworn it was the Duke himself. He attended the old-fashioned cookout that they had for supper one night. Jim won Gold again. The trophies were acrylic shapes of the state of Oklahoma.
Bob Goeller reported that one of our memorial trees at Twin Branch Park needed to be replaced. A motion was made and seconded that Bob buy and replace the tree.
Show chairperson Carl Kindig passed around the job signup sheet for our show. He still needs DOOR PRIZES. It was decided to have plaques for winners, rather than trophies.
Jim and June brought a beautifully decorated
anniversary cake to share. Everyone enjoyed it. The $24 in the 50/50 went to Jim Schmidt, the first time he had ever won at a local meeting.
The meeting was adjourned. June Schmidt, Secretary

A twelve-year-old boy received a journal as a birthday
gift. He looked at it carefully, but was mystified. "Mom, what's the deal with this book? All the pages are blank," he asked.
"That's called a journal," she explained. "You write down interesting stuff that happens to you." His face brightened as he caught her drift. "So it's kinda like a blog, only on paper?!"

1:30PM A 25 year old man from Mason City, IA has been fined $65 for letting his pet snake crawl uncontrolled through the hallways of the local Holiday Inn.
The man was a guest at the hotel, and apparently felt that his 5 year old pet python needed some exercise. What convinced him to let the snake loose in the hallway is a mystery, but the hotel manager says the man was apologetic about the incident.
Now, I'm not a pet owner myself, but I do understand people who love their pets a lot - but to let a python loose in a hotel hallway just boggles the mind.
The Holiday Inn manager did remind guests that the chain is pet friendly, but that their hospitality ends with cats and dogs. So, next time you take a trip, you may want to find a pet-sitter for your python.

Dearborn, Mich. — (July 3) at Daytona International Speedway, a new era of Mustang Racing will begin when the new, highly anticipated Mustang NASCAR Nationwide car makes its debut on the high banks of the legendary Florida track.
Since its public unveiling last October in Concord, N.C., there has been great anticipation from Mustang clubs and enthusiasts about the new car and its four-race schedule for this year and full Nationwide rollout in 2011.
In anticipation of the debut, Ford Racing chatted with two of the individuals responsible for helping get the new Mustang to NASCAR.
PAT DIMARCO – FORD RACING NASCAR PROGRAM MANAGER
WHAT WAS THE THOUGHT PROCESS BEHIND BRINGING THE MUSTANG TO NATIONWIDE VERSUS SOME OF THE OTHER CARS LIKE THE FUSION OR TAURUS?
“NASCAR came to us and wanted to differentiate the Nationwide Series from the Cup Series. Initially, we did look at the Fusion to keep the branding the same across both series, but when they really wanted to differentiate it, the natural choice was Mustang from a company standpoint.
"Plain and simple, the Mustang’s heritage is racing. It just made a good fit to differentiate the Nationwide Series from the Cup Series.”
WHAT’S THE MAJOR DIFFERENCE BETWEEN THE MUSTANG NATIONWIDE CAR VERSUS THE FUSION CUP CAR? WHAT DIFFERENCES WILL THE FANS SEE IN THE GRANDSTANDS?
“The Nationwide Mustang has a lot of brand identity built into it. Working with NASCAR and our aero team, they really put a lot of emphasis on putting more of identity into the nose and the tail. It does not have the typical Cup [Car of Tomorrow] splitter. It has a splitter, but the nose looks more like a production nose of a Mustang.”
DO YOU THINK THE MUSTANG CAR IS A GOOD REPLICATION OF THE PRODUCTION CAR?
“I think it’s a better replication than where the Fusion
is in Cup currently. "My wife is on the Mustang team at Ford and she likes it, and the Mustang Brand Team likes it. I’m sure there will be people out there who will not like it, but I think it is definitely different and it brings the Mustang brand into NASCAR.”
“It’s going to be a great race at Daytona with the next generation Nationwide car, especially with Mustang on the race track for the first time. There is a lot of hype within the company, and the Brand Team is excited to see it on the race track, as are we here at Ford Racing.”
BERNIE MARCUS – FORD RACING NASCAR AERODYNAMICS ENGINEER WHEN YOU RECEIVED THE TASK OF DEVELOPING A MUSTANG NATIONWIDE CAR, WHAT WAS YOUR PHILOSOPHY BEHIND IT?
“First of all, it was a lot more difficult to do the Mustang and turn it into a NASCAR-type vehicle because the nose of the Mustang is a lot more bulky and squarer than that of a Fusion or the Taurus, and those were the sort of cars that we have done in the past. The key to make the Mustang work is that NASCAR opened up the rules in the hood height area and that enabled us to get the character lines of the Mustang into the nose without compromising performance."
WITH THE HERITAGE THE MUSTANG HAS WITHIN FORD AND THROUGHOUT THE RACING WORLD, WAS THERE ADDITIONAL PRESSURE ON YOU TO GET IT RIGHT?
“Yes, obviously the Mustang is a huge icon in the
U.S.A. as far as a car goes. To turn it into a representative NASCAR vehicle within the constraints of the rules, and then obviously to get the performance out of it, there was quite a bit of pressure added on. I think we did the best job we could under the constraints. We got the performance right and we also got the looks right.”
DO YOU FEEL LIKE AN EXPECTING FATHER WITH THIS CAR BECAUSE IT’S BEEN LIKE YOUR BABY?
“A little bit. The July Daytona race is a big race. It’s probably the second biggest race besides the Daytona 500. It’s a big event to roll the car out for the first time. I think it’s a good event to do it at. We can’t wait.”

Ford seems determined to paint its Blue Oval green. With a new high-mileage import like the Fiesta joining the hybrid Fusion near the pointy end of the fuel economy pyramid, the Ford marketing team seems emboldened to convince the world that everything it touches turns to green, even the iconic Mustang.
Throughout the decades, the image of the Mustang has always been a car that loves to be driven hard and fast, and purchased by drivers whose concerns over fuel economy generally show up on the daily priority list somewhere south of, well, everything.
Yet Ford dreamed up a stunt worthy of interest. It took a stock 2011 Mustang V6, filled its gas tank and turned it loose at the high-banked Bristol Motor Speedway in Tennessee for a test run. The goal: To see how far it could go before it ran out of gas. While the results were pretty extraordinary, we are still left wondering exactly who is supposed to be impressed here. Fuel conscious? NASCAR fans? Both? It could be that the new normal in the automotive world is bridging the two in the most authentic ways possible.
The Mustang completed a total of 1,457 laps -- each lap is just over half a mile -- in 17 hours and 40 minutes, meaning it averaged 48.5 miles per gallon over the 776.5 miles driven. (The V6 Mustang with an automatic transmission has an EPA rating of 31 miles per gallon highway, and 19 mpg in the city.) The entire run was made on a single tank of fuel, 16 gallons. A team of five drivers, including four Ford engineers and NASCAR driver David Ragan, drove the car.
To hype the test, Ford sponsored a contest where the public was to guess how many laps the 'Stang would run. The company said that more than 51,000 fans submitted guesses online, and that one of those who picked the winning number would win a Mustang.
controllers, "prepared for the challenge by implementing fuel efficient driving tips like minimizing the use of air conditioning, steady and consistent driving, avoiding sudden stops/starts and by keeping the RPMs low."
Just like most every Mustang driver, right?

South Bend Crowds are always large and enthusiastic Maybe they’ve heard things about our members...

The Mishawaka Parade also drew a good crowd. 17 Mustangs represented the club. Some of the 14 cars on display...

Captain America was on hand to protect our 9 cars.
Thanks Scott and staff for your hospitality!

Chef Laura made sure no one went away hungry! Many thanks to Laura and her staff for a fun day.

Howard’s Granddaughter Simone enjoyed greeting the crowds

Once again, a large crowd was on hand. Of course, the fact that candy is allowed at this parade may have helped!

Many of the kids in the crowd were torn between looking at Mustangs or the fellow directly behind us.

Well of course they did. If John Hennessey is known for anything, it's strictly adhering to the "Needs more power!" motif. This guy could watch a shuttle launch and return to his lab plotting a third booster. So yes, Hennessey has slapped two turbochargers onto Ford's batty-yet-burly F150-mutant Raptor 6.2 and produced the VelociRaptor 600 and 800, two products that will nicely compliment the existing Hennessey VelociRaptor 500 , a supercharged version of the Raptor 5.4.
Through the magic of forced induction, power grows from the 6.2-liter V8 Raptor's stock 411 horsepower and 434 pound-feet of torque to a slightly-goofy 602 hp and 622 lb-ft of twist in the V-Rap 600. Not enough for you? Hennessey either, which is why he's also selling the VelociRaptor 800. Get all the liquids out of your mouth now, as the engine stonks it up to the Texas-sized tune of 810 hpand 745 lb-ft of torque. Can we borrow an exclamation point?
We know what you're thinking -- the Bentley Mulsane's twin-turbo V8 makes 752 pound-feet of torque, besting the Hennessey 800 by seven pounds of twisting force. However, the Hennessey VelociRaptor 800 makes 305 more ponies than the British thoroughbred, weighs less (what doesn't?) and can keep up with the hounds no matter the fox hunt. That said, the Muslanne has a nicer interior. Think we're being silly? We are, because engines like this bend our minds a bit. Remember, 810 hp is nearly 100 hp morethan a Ferrari 599XX.
But what if you already have a Raptor 6.2, want more power but don't want two turbochargers? Again, no problem, as Hennessey is also announcing the VelociRaptor 475, that through better breathing and some reprogramming, ups the big V8's output to 475 hp and 485 lb-ft of torque. Dang.

In their very own Lost flashback moment, a Florida couple has discovered that they crossed paths much earlier in their lives -- on childhood vacations at Walt Disney World .
Days before their wedding, Donna Voutsinas was showing her then-fiancé Alex old family photos, when she came upon one of her and her siblings posing with the pirate Smee at Walt Disney World.
But, as the couple told WESH TV , Alex was more interested in the man pushing a stroller in the background. Turns out, it was Alex's father pushing the stroller that Alex was riding in.
At the time, Donna's family lived in Florida, and Alex
was visiting the Sunshine State from Montreal. The Voutsinases met decades later at work, not at Walt Disney World. Today, they live in Boynton Beach, Florida.
"Just to be in the same picture with my wife when we were basically toddlers, it's unbelievable," Alex Voutsinas said.

I am thinking about selling my 1999 Mustang GT convertible. It is the anniversary edition and has the thirty-fifth placards on the side. It is a dark green satin metallic five speed with parchment leather interior. It came with key standard equipment and many options. It is in excellent condition and all original with 4,700 miles. It has been stored winters and kept in the garage when not driven in the summer. I have the thirty-fifth anniversary gifts that came with it. I also have the widow price sticker.
I drive it in the summer in this area. I still enjoy it, but
drive it less every summer. If you know anyone that would be interested in it, I will sell it for $25,000.00

(Yes, with commentary, too.)
I wrote this last year, but we do have quite a few new members since then, so I thought I’d repeat it...
Seven trees stand to the south and west of the picnic shelter in Twin Branch Park. Seven trees...some well on their way to maturity, others in various stages of the journey...Seven trees planted by the Michiana Mustangs Club in remembrance of members we have lost in the past few years.
The eight people recognized by these trees helped make the club what it is today. Some were not with us a long time; others had a profound influence on us as a club and, for many of us, personally.
Each year we gather among the trees to formally remember our friends. Of course, for many of us these people are in our thoughts throughout the year.
The trees in the park...one more part of the Michiana
Mustangs ‘family’. And Bob, even there’s no tree in the park (as you wished), we’re thinking of you, too.

I’m still looking for Spring Fling stories and pictures. If you have any to share, please send them to me.
***
Don’t forget about our Track Day at the Tire Rack on Saturday, September 4. This has traditionally been the most fun you can legally have with a car and still not damage it. Let’s see everyone there!
***
If anyone has a suggestion of a destination for the ‘2010 Food Tour’ please contact Brad or me. If we can get it going I think it would be a lot of fun.
