Das Essenhaus Cruise-In

On Thursday, July 24th, the Michiana Mustangs were featured at the Das Essenhaus Cruise-In. There were 20 club member cars on display.

Throughout the evening, Joel Miller (The Essenhaus coordinator) mentioned our club and our car show over the PA system. And, on a couple of occasions, made the mistake of giving the mic to Curly. I told them about the club (the number of members, when we met, where we meet, the dues, our affiliation with the MCA and the level of activities). I also, on each occasion promoted our car show at the Concord Mall. Joel and the Essenhaus folks always make an extra effort to accommodate our club.

Joel told us that we can come as a group anytime and he will recognize the club. With the 10% coupons, our club attendees ate well at the Essenhaus restaurant. Some even took advantage of the 20% coupons to do a little shopping. We captured a few of the door prizes one of which was a tasty pastry (I know - I won that). After the cruise-in, 17 of our club members made it over to Karon & Curly's house for home made ice cream and chocolate, Texas sheet brownies. With the great weather, we sat on the deck, ate and listen to tales from some of the group -have Brad tell you about a trip out west when one carload lost their cookies along the road. This was our 2nd annual Das Essenhaus and we plan to do it again just before our car show. Thanks very much to those club members that were in attendance. Some of our club members regularly go to this cruise-in. If the club would like to attend as a group before this season is over, let me know and we'll set it up. Maybe even more home made ice cream.

In His Grace

Our First Mustang

I've always been a Ford guy in a Ford family. Dad regularly had Fords and Mercs. My first was a '37 pickup in which I always had to carry lots of extra water and oil (definitely not a Chick car). My first special Ford was a 1953 black and white hard top with skirts, mud flaps, dual glass packs, twin rear fender antennas, shaved hood and lowered three inches. Late one night, I tangled with a 1200 pound, black Angus steer - we both lost.

Next, I moved up to a 1956 Ford cream over aqua hardtop. That baby would run and wasn't bad as a Chick car. I gave it up in 1958 when I went into the Army. Fast forward to September of 1965. Karon and I were just out of college, driving my Mom’s all black, 4 door, 1960 Comet, two kids, few possessions, living in a rented duplex, a student loan and no money. So, one day I told her I was going to the Ford garage to look at cars. Some time later, she hears this roaring, rumbling sound coming down the street only to see me pull into the driveway with a new Mustang. It was 1965 white, 2+2 fast back with red interior, white walls, flipper caps and a cool red stripe down the side. And it would move. A real family car, right?

With only a few miles on the car, we were taking my Mom's car back to her. Karon left for the two hour trip some time ahead of me and stopped in a town along the way. While there, someone jumped their car over the curb, caving in the right front fender and drove away. Every one at home was afraid to tell me imagining how distraught and yes mad I was going to be. I did live through it didn't I?

We had many great times in that beauty until our third kid came along and there wasn't enough room in that car for one more and not enough money to keep it. So, we traded it for a 1967 Ford station wagon. As I and millions of others I hear say regularly, "I owned a Mustang once and BOY do I wish I'd never sold that car". But God has been good and we now have three of the most fun cars ever made.
