Welcome to the club. We’re looking forward to getting to know you!

Minutes from Last Month’s Meeting

President Howard Barrett welcomed members and guests and reminded us that it was only 12 days until Spring begins (on the calendar, anyway). With the snowpack and cool weather we are having, it's hard to believe that.

Members and guests present were: Art Anderson, Scott Anderson & daughter Miranda, Howard Barrett, Becky & Art Campbell, Pranay Gaikwad, Pat & Bob Goeller, Lola & Terry Gunderman, Rob Killingsworth, Shari & Blair Knaak, Neal Lewis, Rose & Hal McClure, Brad Milliken & Kim Zink, Charlotte & Ron Newcomer, Tandy & Phil Niocodemus, Arnie O’Blenis, Blake Pierce, Kevin Price, Diane & Kenny Reed, Robert Relos, Paul E.

Rogers, Jim & June Schmidt, Mark Taelman, Alan Wright, Jane & David Yoder, and Mark Zerkel Karen and Howard Barrett are celebrating their 40th

wedding anniversary this month. Congratulations!

If your membership dues are due this month, please see Treasurer Dave Yoder. The secretary and treasurer's reports were approved. MCA REGIONAL DIRECTOR Jim Schmidt reported

that he has sent requests for insurance applications for our car show on August 7 and for the Tire Rack Event on September 4. MCA shows we have thirty- two MCA members. Although our records show 43 MCA members, it still is higher than the number of members in any other Indiana Regional club.

When trying to apply to enter the National Show in Asheville, N. C., Jim discovered that all the spots are filled already and that show is not until Labor Day Weekend. The show sold out in 5 days.

Howard reported that the Cavalcade of Wheels will be March 20 and 21st. As of now, Blake Pierce and Howard plan to display their Mustangs along with any other club information for which there would be space.

Events Director Brad Milliken reported that a celebration of the 46th anniversary of the Mustang will be held at Mustang McDonalds on April 16. Plan to attend and have a piece of birthday cake that our club will be providing. Thanks to Brad for making those arrangements and also for the bowling events that everyone had enjoyed.

Bob Goeller introduced special guest Pranay Gaikwad who is the director of marketing at the Harold Ziegler dealership. On May 8th, they are planning to have a well-publicized Mustang show for anyone for a $15 entrance fee. Awards will be given and food will also be available for purchase. All proceeds will be matched by Harold Ziegler and given to a local

charity. Newsletter Editor Art is still waiting for your newsletter articles. Let him know if you need help

writing something about your car for the "My Pony" section. Our club plans to participate in the Mishawaka

Memorial Day Parade. Members are eagerly awaiting applications for the Spring Fling at Brown County Park on April 20-22. If you have ever attended, you should be receiving the SAAC Newsletter in the mail. It will contain your car show application as well as your application for hotel/ cabin reservations. This is usually our clubs' first outing of the spring and well-attended. Try it. We're

sure you will enjoy the weekend with fellow club members and their Mustangs. The 50/50 money was won by Tandy

Nicodemus. Other prizes were won by Bob Goeller

and Arnie O’Blenis. Bob Goeller has been keeping in touch with Larry Weaver for us. He reports that Larry looks good and is gaining his strength back slowly. We will all continue to keep him in our prayers.

Our next meeting will be April 12th with a Board meeting following the regular meeting. The meeting was adjourned at 7:35. June Schmidt, Secretary

Get Well (update) ...

I just spoke with Larry Weaver; his progress is much slower than he’d like, but it is steady. He still tires very easily and sleeps quite a bit. Larry and Shirley mentioned again how much they appreciate all the cards, calls, and prayers. They both send their love to the club. People can call them at home (574) 6749827.

Ford Recalls 2010 Mustang for Being Too Cool!

DETROIT—-Ford officials issued a massive recall of the entire 2010 Mustang line Tuesday, apologizing for a quality-control oversight that led to the company manufacturing a badass muscle car that was way too awesome for the American public. "We deeply regret this lapse in judgment and accept full responsibility for the mistake," Ford CEO Alan R. Mulally said standing beside a gorgeous, cherry-red vehicle recalled for being "way too smoking." "After numerous road tests, we've found the car to be a mean, mean ride that Americans are simply not cool enough to handle, and it would be irresponsible of us to allow anyone to get behind the wheel of this killer car. It's truly frightening how sweet the Mustang is." According to Mulally, Ford has canceled production on the 2011 Mustang, and will instead release a line of fuel-efficient vehicles in an effort to appeal to boring old Americans.

Remember what month this is...

Donald N. Frey, Designer of the Mustang, Dies at 86

By DOUGLAS MARTIN

Published: March 28, 2010 Donald N. Frey, the engineer who spearheaded the design and development of the Mustang, the spunky, stylish, affordably priced “pony car” that the Ford Motor Company rolled out in the mid-1960s in one of the most successful car introductions in automotive history, died March 5 in Evanston, Ill., where he lived. He was 86.

The cause was a stroke, his son Christopher said.

Donald Nelson Frey was born on March 13, 1923, in St. Louis and grew up in Waterloo, Iowa, where his father was chief metallurgist for a John Deere plant. He attended Michigan State University for two years, then left to serve in the Army in World War II. After his discharge, he earned bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees in metallurgy from the University of Michigan .

Mr. Frey (pronounced fry) would go on to other achievements. He was chairman and chief executive of the Bell & Howell Company, recipient of the National Medal of Technology and a member of the executive board of the World Bank . He was proudest, he said, of helping to introduce safety improvements like disc brakes and radial tires to Ford cars.

But to automotive cognoscenti and just plain car lovers, the Mustang was his defining accomplishment. At gatherings of Mustang enthusiasts, Mr. Frey was often besieged by autograph hunters in the manner of a rock star.

In addition to his son Christopher, Mr. Frey is survived by his fourth wife, Kay Everly, from whom he was separated; another son, Donald Jr.; three daughters, Margaret Walton, Catherine McNair and Elizabeth Sullivan; a brother, Stuart, who was also a top executive at Ford; nine grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren.

At his death Mr. Frey owned an original Mustang, his son Christopher said, adding that he liked to drive it fast.

What Can You Find at an MCA National Show?

As the MCA Regional Director for the Michiana Mustangs, you’ve probably heard me say a number of times that you can have a great time at the National Shows and you get to meet many Mustang friends. As June & I have attended these National gatherings we’ve found many new friends in the Mustang family. Like Bob Goeller once said, “the Michana Mustangs is like a large family and, by the way, they like Mustangs.”

The July 4th weekend in 2009 was spent in Raleigh, N.C., enjoying a MCA National Show at the N.C. State Fairgrounds. The weather was perfect and many Mustangs were in attendance. The host hotel was a block away from the show site. The show site had an inside air conditioned display area for those that wanted it and registered early enough. The other cars were split between two lots. The one lot near the building was for those that would leave their cars at the site, while the other was for those that would be leaving each day. Between the two lots were the vendor area and a pony coral. We chose the further lot, to give us some flexibility in the evening.

Walking back and forth between our car and the building where we spent time with some dear friends from N.C. (we met them at the Louisville National several years ago), I saw this beautiful 1966 Springtime Yellow Coupe. It was a numbers matching car with an ‘A’ Code 289 4Bbl, which had been rebuilt to the tune of $4500. The car had less than 500 miles on it since the engine had been reworked and new exhaust system, seats, headliner, carpet and pad, exterior chrome and paint were done. I have always had a desire for a 1st generation, but I’m not mechanically inclined. I thought if I ever came across one in decent shape I might make the move, but hey, you can always dream. I looked at the car several times, even took some pictures, but then realistically said to myself I really didn’t need it. By the way, the couple from Louisville have a 1966 Springtime Yellow Fastback that was shown for the first time at Louisville after a Concours restoration. That first show and all since have resulted in GOLD for Concours Trailered Class. I did ask Ken what he thought of the coupe in the coral and he said it looked good, but then again I just didn’t need another Mustang!

At our club picnic, I showed some the pictures I had taken of it and indicated what he was asking for it. These members were so nice to say, “How come you passed that up?” I kept telling myself that we had our ‘94GT and our ‘05GT and where would I put it? Well, I kept thinking about it and finally June said ‘If you had the phone number you could call the owner and with it probably being gone, you could forget about it’. Well, I had taken a picture of the display he had on the dash showing what he had done to the car along with his name and phone number, so I called – which was a mistake. I asked if the car was still available and it was. I asked a few questions and he lowered the price and I said, ‘I want it!”

In my discussion of the possibility of getting this car, Curly Long graciously volunteered his Navigator & trailer to pick up the car in Raleigh if I’d pay for the gas. It was a deal, so then when could all parties get together to accomplish this? Karon and June heard our discussion and suggested that since there was room, why didn’t we all go and make it a nice mini vacation. It was a go, so the morning after the 2009 Michiana Mustang Car Show, we headed to Raleigh,

N.C. I had made motel reservations for the whole

trip, so we knew where we would be every night. The trip was uneventful, except when we were approaching Raleigh and the outside temperature reading on the dash showed 1 0 2 degrees!!!!!

Curly, Karon, and June, ready to head home!

(continued on page 7)

What Can You Find …

(continued from page 6)

Once we picked up the car and started back, Curly said to watch for the cars passing us and then slowing down to get a good look. I noticed this especially when I was driving and saw the thumbs up and smiles numerous times. Every time we stopped for gas or at the motel, people would always have some nice comments. It really made me feel proud to have my 1st Generation Mustang.

I’d like to thank Curly and Karon for their assistance; they are truly dear friends.

Home in Indiana at the Kouts Porkfest Parade

Everyone says that early Mustangs must have a name, so what should I name my ’66? After much thought, I decided it couldn’t be called anything but J

I L L. There’s another story here, but those involved will recall the reasoning and this experience with a smile.

Try a National MCA Show! You do not have to purchase another Mustang, but you will have a GREAT TIME !

The Donation

Father O'Malley answers the phone ..."Top of the morning to you!" "Hello, is this Father O'Malley?" "It is." "This is the IRS. Can you help us?" "I can." "Do you know a Ted Houlihan?" "I do." "Is he a member of your congregation?" "He is." "Did he donate $10,000 to the church?" "He will!"

Mustang's 46th Birthday

Come celebrate the 46th birthday of the Ford Mustang at Mustang McDonalds on Friday, April16 at 6:00 PM. As in the past, we will be serving cake from Sam's Club to all that attend. Shine 'em up and see you there! Hope you can make it.

At The Cemetery

Three Irishmen -- Paddy, Sean and Seamus -- were stumbling home from the pub late one night and found themselves on the road which led past the old graveyard.

"Come have a look over here," says Paddy. "It's Michael O'Grady's grave, God bless his soul. He lived to the ripe old age of 87."

"That's nothing," says Sean, "here's one named Patrick

O'Toole, and it says here he was 95 when he died." Just then, Seamus yells out, "Good God, here's a fella that got to be 145!"

"What was his name?" asks Paddy. Seamus stumbles around a bit, awkwardly lights a match to see what else is written on the stone marker, and exclaims, "Miles, from Dublin."

From the Back Seat…

I drew a blank for a topic this month. You may need a break from my babbling anyway.

I was rescued by my bride’s offer to be a guest columnist this month. Hope you enjoy it.

Have a good month...

The ‘Perfect’ Car

I just came back from my first drive of the year in my old Mustang. She has been sitting all winter, waiting for me. I have gone out to the garage a few times and started her up, usually with the help of the battery charger. The dust has been lovingly wiped off, and I have spent too much time waiting for better weather. The better weather arrived in the form of 80 degrees and sunshine in early April!

The old girl fired right up tonight. The idle is too fast and very rough. There is some work waiting for me. Backing out of the garage and onto our quiet dead-end street, I can hear a rattle from the exhaust. We take a short, slow route around our neighborhood. I want to get familiar with the controls and reacquaint myself with her quirks. The turn signals aren’t working. The headlights are very dim. I have virtually no interior lights but it is still daylight in northern Indiana, so I am not too worried. As I approach the road that heads back home, I decide to go a little further. We drive up into Michigan – just a mile from our home – and take a little longer trip getting back.

She has a lot of rattles and squeaks. The radio is shot. The steering is getting sloppy. There is a spot on the driver’s seat where the original stitching is coming loose. All of the weather stripping needs to be replaced. The list gets longer.

My old Mustang is perfect. So is yours. So is the one sitting next to you at a show and shine, or a car show. Those of us who love or have ever loved an old car know the feeling. So what if we don’t have Sirius XM, OnStar, reliable alternators, power windows, or cup holders? We have treasured memories of life with these amazing time machines.

Happy cruising.
